Kitty!!!

A kitty came to live on our boat yesterday. She's cute and lovely and completely loveable. Her name is Pixie. I'm very excited. Pics will follow!

Venus Glows

My universe
he is
expanding
space unfolds
ventures untold dimensions
when he names me
Love
cradles my revolutions
as I dance the essence
of this whole
of all
he is
the gravity that holds my gaze
I am his star
the twinkling in his I.

Riders on the storm

Hurricane Dennis had us in a frenzy yesterday. We had to drastically cut short our visit with friends in Ocala to drive straight from Florence to Miami, because several people had called us and told us the winds were already kicking up pretty hard by yesterday afternoon. By the time we got to the boat around ten at night, the weather was too rough to bring her into a slip in the marina. So we decided to ride out the storm in the anchorage. We secured some things on the boat in preparation for high winds, and got a couple of hours sleep (a welcome rest after our fifteen hour drive down from Alabama) before Dennis made his presence known. Dennis was a lot bigger and stronger than we had expected, so we donned our foul weather jackets, let out some more anchor line to reduce our chances of dragging around the anchorage, and stationed ourselves in the cockpit, where we kept watch (with the engine running in case we had to move quickly) for the next six hours of rain, thunder, green(!) lightning, and more wind than I ever care to see again while at anchor on any boat. Dennis -whose eye passed on the other side of the state- did not hit us with full force, but the wind gusts easily hit 80 mph in the anchorage, and around three in the morning I think everyone in Miami must have woken up from the howling and shaking of it all. A couple of boats went down, one landed on the beach, and a few others hooked their lines together and spent the night banging into their neighbors. I'm glad we came through this one without incident. Next time we will make sure to be there in time to get to a slip!

July 7, 2005 - Florence, Alabama

A turtle hissed at me today.

Just like a cat. I had no idea turtles could produce sounds like that. This one unleashed his best, meanest, and painfully cute whisper of hostility on me as he withdrew into his shell. Of course, I had just picked him up to remove him from the two lane road he was leisurely crossing and carried him back into the field he had probably spent the past 57 hours trying to leave behind. I definitely deserved it.
