July 7, 2005 - Florence, Alabama

A turtle hissed at me today.

Just like a cat. I had no idea turtles could produce sounds like that. This one unleashed his best, meanest, and painfully cute whisper of hostility on me as he withdrew into his shell. Of course, I had just picked him up to remove him from the two lane road he was leisurely crossing and carried him back into the field he had probably spent the past 57 hours trying to leave behind. I definitely deserved it.

why bring him back to where he came from, why didn't you bring him to his destination?

I'm not actually sure in which direction the turtle intended to cross the road. Judging by the way he was hanging out smack in the middle of it, he probably would have gone into the pavement with the next passing car.
